Dr. Carol Paras is a Board-Certified Adult Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist, with over four decades of direct patient care experience, who, in the last 15 years, has focused her work exclusively on the mental health concerns of women.
She was trained in The Department of Psychiatry at Yale University, and later completed her post-graduate fellowship training in Adolescent Psychiatry and Eating Disorders at the Cornell University-Westchester Division.
For many years she was The Medical Director of her own multi-site outpatient and inpatient program for adolescents, young adults and families.
She was also The Director of an Evaluation Center for a private psychiatric hospital system, the school psychiatrist for a large diverse school system, and a participant in the development of two psychologically supportive special educational programs.
Dr. Paras has an excellent sense of development and the life cycle, having worked with younger persons for quite some time. This experience is especially relevant to women who are intimately connected, in most instances, with family.
Originally trained by experts in the biopsychosocial model and by psychoanalytically oriented supervisors and family systems experts, Dr. Paras’ orientation and clinical style is now quite eclectic, goal oriented and practical.
She has studied Clinical Hypnosis, CBT, EMDR and Ego State Therapy and incorporates many of these techniques into your treatment, if they are deemed to be useful.
As a psychiatrist, she is fully proficient in the evaluation of the whole person, medically and psychologically. Believing fully in treating the whole person, she is very attuned to her patients’ medical conditions and concerns. She adheres to the philosophy that an attuned mind/body connection delivers optimal health and happiness.
As a psychotherapist, she generally takes the approach of “leaving no stone unturned”, until the issues that you sought help for, are resolved. If necessary, she will refer you to a higher level of care or a different type of care to achieve your goals.
She prefers to work without medication treatment for a month or two, since many problems do partially or fully resolve without medications. Of course, she will use medications early on in treatment, if this is indicated.
Her philosophy is to use the least possible effective dosages of medications.
She also encourages and educates her patients about natural techniques to alleviate stress and anxiety, and promote health in general.
Dr. Paras is licensed in N.Y., N.J., and Florida. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, A Fellow of the American Board of Adolescent Psychiatry, Certified by The American Board of Clinical Hypnosis, an Emdria- Approved Therapist, and has Completed Level One EST Approved Training.
